I stood at the Newmans’ back gate, leash in hand, cursing my existence. Josh had persuaded his wife to let Prometheus return home. Now I peered into the darkened alley, trying to see across to Pamela Wellman’s back gate. The large poodle, knowing home was near, strained at the leash, pulling me forward.

“She probably doesn’t even know the dog’s gone yet,” Josh wheedled from behind me. “If you do it fast, you’ll be fine!”

Hoping for the best, I stumbled across, following Prometheus to a door, where he stopped, looking up at me expectantly. The numbers on the door confirmed it was the right one. Thank goodness, I thought, reaching for the doorknob. Corinne had said it would be open.

It was locked.

I tried it several times, unable to believe my bad luck. It remained stubbornly closed against us. Prometheus whined and scratched at the door, then let loose with a volley of barks, registering his outrage.

“C’mon, boy!” I raced back across the alley, pulling the dog with me and reaching Josh’s door.

It was locked too.

I pounded on the door, no longer caring about noise. “Josh, let me in!”

His voice came from behind the door: “Please just return the dog first?”

“Let. Me. In!”

“Just tell her you found him. I can’t afford to have her know we were involved.”

I looked over toward Pamela’s dark, still backyard. No sign that she’d missed her beloved pet yet or was up looking for him. Her wall had to be seven feet high. No way to get myself over it, let alone a big dog.

“Josh!” This time I kicked his door, only to be greeted by silence.

I wanted to kill Josh for this. At the same time, I knew I could do it. Already, a plan was forming in my head.

Standing next to me in the dark, Prometheus gave a tentative whimper and put his cold nose in my hand.

“It’s okay, boy. I won’t leave you.”

All I had to do was return the dog without implicating Josh and Corinne. I would figure out what to say to Pamela when I got there.
